A UV water filter uses the latest in water purification technology to bring you clean water. These filters are great for camping because they're ultra-light and portable. Here's how a UV water filter works and why it may or may not be the filter for you on your next camping or backpacking trip.

First off, a UV "water filter" is a bit of a mis-nomer. These clever little devices don't actually "filter" the water, per se... What they really do is disinfect the water. A UV water filter essentially uses UV rays - stronger than those of the sun - to kill organisms and bacteria living in water. The most effective filters kill nearly all living things in the water that they treat. These types of systems are being installed more and more in Third World countries where it's necessary to treat all the water before First World visitors drink it. Now, though, they also come in convenient portable form that make great light-weight solutions for the ultra-lightweight backpacker and camper.

A portable UV water filter is basically like a little UV pen. You stick it into the water, hold it on for a certain amount of time, and have hygenically clean water to drink. You don't need to have special filters or carry special bottles, you can just disinfect water before you're ready to drink it.

Newest UV Camping Water Filter Models

Of course, the fact that this is a portable and highly effective way to filter water is helpful. Also, the newest types of UV water filter no longer require batteries, which means you don't have to worry about running out of power for your camping water filter even while you're on a long hike in the back-forty. Many hardcore hikers & outdoor enthusiasts even toss them into their packs as backups because they are so small, lightweight, and inexpensive.

UV Water Filter Taste

The main problem with a UV water filter though, is that it doesn't filter the water for taste. A carbon filter that takes out many of the minerals that make water taste bad is helpful for this. Some people may choose to carry a UV water filter pen to disinfect the water and a carbon filter bottle to make it taste more pleasant. Regardless, one of the best things about using a UV water filter for hiking and backpacking is that the cold mountain stream you draw your water from already tastes great!

When choosing a camping water filter, you should just be aware of your own unique needs. The UV water filter is great for people who need ultra-portability, but right now, most of these tiny water purifiers can only handle one bottle of water at a time. When base camping, you may need one of these per person as well as a larger stationary camping water filter that can filter large quantities of water. Alternatives to the UV water filter are the many great backpacking water filters available.
